Right and Left

In Japan one drives on the left side of the road. So people walk on the left side of the sidewalk. In the subways one enters the car on the left. Escalators however, are a different matter. Sometimes the down escalator is on the left and sometimes it is on the right. Sometimes the escalator takes people down while right beside that escalator people are walking up. Sometimes the escalator takes people up while the people going down have to walk. Sometimes you have to walk going in both directions but eve then sometimes you walk on the right and sometimes you walk up on the left.
Andi reminds me to stand to the left on the escalator so people can pass but not everyone follows that rule which seems strange in a land where following the rules is highly valued. The one thing you can be sure of in a subway is that you cannot be sure of which side to walk on.
